LR Nelson Brass Quick Connector
Each of our garden hoses has a coupler on the business end. There's a male fitting on the other end of each hose, plus one on each nozzle, lawn sprinkler, or other accessory.I also put a coupler on each sillcock, so hoses can be easily disconnected prior to the winter freeze. With this setup, everything is a quick-disconnect.
Pros:
- Nearly 100% leak-proof connection, every time!
- Quality construction:
... machined brass; not perfect, but more than good enough for this purpose.
... stainless steel: retainer balls/C clip/spring
... rubber hose gasket and "O" ring in the coupling.
- The business-end of the coupler is tough enough to not be ruined if you accidently drop it on hard surface, unlike the previous brand of brass quick-disconnects I owned.
- Connection/disconnection of the adapter and coupler is easy - even for my wife, who is neither strong nor mechanically inclined. The "O" ring is deep inside the coupler, protected from physical damage; instead of on the adapter, exposed to damage. The adapter tip is tapered, so it won't dislodge or nick the coupler's O ring, and it barely slides past that "O" before locking in place and creating a leak-proof connection.
- The inside diameter of the male fitting is 1/2", which allows high water volume.Inferior quick disconnect systems are only 5/16" to 3/8".
- If the coupling accumulates mineral deposits [after years of use], it can be disassembled for cleaning by removing the C ring.
Cons:
- The serrations on the adapter are to grab when tightening it into a nozzle or other accessory.Unfortunately, I sometimes can't get it tight enough with just my fingers, for it to not leak.Tightening with a crescent wrench, by gripping the area just beyond the threads, stops the leak, but that leaves teeth marks. One solution to this issue would have been to make this part of the adapter with 6-sides, so an open-end wrench could be used.Using a crescent or similar wrench on the section of adapter that slides into the coupler could ruin it.
- Couplers are available with female hose threads only.If you want male hose threads, you'll need a male/male adapter, i.e., male hose threads on both ends.
- Adaptors are available with male hose threads only.If you want female hose threads, you'll need a female/female adapter, i.e., female hose threads on both ends (see Customer Images); do an Amazon or Google Product search on: brass female hose Adapter 3/4"
Other:
- As of this writing Amazon doesn't sell replacement "O" rings for this product. To find suppliers, Google Product search on: nelson o ring
- When the "O" ring eventually wears out, hardens, or cracks (it IS rubber after all); replace it with a new one. This, and the coupler hose gasket are the only parts to wear out.
- If there's resistance connecting the adapter to the coupling, apply some thick oil or silicone grease on the "O" ring.
- As of this writing Amazon doesn't carry just the male adapter; instead, selling only two-piece coupling/adapter sets.Google Product Search on "Nelson Brass" for suppliers.
Summary:
This is an excellent garden hose/accessory quick connect system. My rating would be 4.5 stars, but since that's not allowed, it gets 4 stars.
